Peter Cruikshanks: Business Coach and Advisor

Here’s some background about me.

Many of the business owners I work with describe me using words like, trusted, giving confidence, supportive, partner, friend. Words are good but working closely with someone on your business needs that ‘know, like, trust’ approach.

So, start with my video below, read my blogs and case studies and speak to people who have worked with me. Then, let’s talk over a coffee, see if we share similar values and understanding. Finally, we could spend some time together working on how to make your business work better in one specific area,

And here’s more factual things about me.

I am a chartered accountant with a background in manufacturing, insurance and utilities. My experience includes working in large and small businesses in financial and commercial management roles. I have done loads of business and process improvement, whilst ensuring people are fully involved in the changes. I have grown a £2 million turnover water management business within the Kelda Group.

For the last 12 years I have been advising the owners of SMEs in Yorkshire on growing their businesses, increasing profits and making them more sellable. Have a look at my case studies and testimonials. You can always directly ask those business owners to say how I have helped them.

On a more personal side of my life, I am a keen rugby supporter, following Ulster Rugby in the Pro 14 competition, and of course, Ireland in the Six Nations. No surprise that Ultimate Rugby is my favourite phone app. I’m a regular runner, about 20 to 30 miles a week. You may see me running on the roads of Ossett or nearby trails to keep up to speed for 10k, 10 mile or half marathon races.

I am a trustee and treasurer of Back to Front, a charity that supports the residents of Harehills in learning how to grow fruit and vegetables at home.

How I Work: Collaborating to Improve your Business

  • I follow 4 disciplines in my relationship with business owners and how we work. Research by Karen Martin, a leading US change management expert, shows that outstanding organisations adopt four disciplines to keep them at the top of their game:

    1. Having clarity about what they are about;

    2. Being super focused on what they are doing and avoiding distraction;

    3. Being disciplined about how the work gets done and who does it;

    4. Engaging the whole workforce in the first three disciplines.

    I totally agree with her findings and apply the 4 disciplines when:

    We work together

    I encourage clarity about what we are looking to achieve together; We focus on what we agree to do; I help us be disciplined about meeting dates and agendas; I adopt an engaging and empathetic style of working together.

    You take these disciplines into your business

    Having clarity about business strategy and direction so that all the business is working off the same page; focusing on what is important in achieving the business goals and avoiding distraction from too many priorities; using disciplined ways of working such as daily management meetings, visual management and standard processes; involving all the business in making the first three disciplines work properly.
